VILLA MAIREA - ALVAR AALTO

ASSESSMENT 2

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PLACES

Ground floor

Green symbolised the public spaces, and the dark blue symbolised private areas

First floor

The highlighted L shape was the design of the house which was a layout designed which automatically created a semi-private enclosure to one side, and a more exclusive, formal edge to confront the public world on the other. The lawn and the swimming pool are situated in the angle of the L, with a variety of rooms overlooking them.

So in the above and below picture, I had lifted up the L shape walls allowing to see the views in which side projects out the private and public spaces.

ARCHITECTURAL ATTITUDE AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MATERIALS OF THE HOUSE

Stone, Wood, Brick and Glass

In the following pictures, I had singled out all the features of the house used with Stone, Wood, Brick and Glass. All that is purple is the representation of those materials. By doing this, it allows us to see how much those materials have been used, and what Aalto has used them for.

ARCHITECTURAL ATTITUDE AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MATERIALS OF THE HOUSE

Wood

Throughout the Villa Mairea, it is obvious to see how much wood material has been used throughout the exterior and interior. Alvar Aalto uses an abundance of Organic and natural materials, which expresses a quite natural feel of the house.

DETAILED VIEW OF THE COLUMNS AND ITS STRUCTURAL STRATEGY ON THE LIFE OF THE HOUSE

Throughout the Villa Mairea, columns have been placed randomly around the house, with the majority of them being structural. The design of the columns also represent the forest outside, which creates a blurred experience from being inside and outside.

The columns are tripped clad with wooden strips, and some bound with rattan.

The picture above, is also a proposition, where I have replaced all the columns with trees, and branches, and open walls, which give that open forest feeling within the house

This picture I have added in a roof, to show a bit of the closer and also the suns shadows. The sun study on how it enters the house
